Asthma

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a common lung condition that causes occasional breathing difficulties.

It affects people of all ages and often starts in childhood, although it can also develop for the first time in adults.

There’s currently no cure, but there are simple treatments that can help keep the symptoms under control so it doesn’t have a big impact on your life.

Symptoms

The main symptoms of asthma are:

● Wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing) ● Breathlessness ● A tight chest, which may feel like a band is tightening around it ● Coughing

The symptoms can sometimes get temporarily worse. This is known as an asthma attack.

Several conditions can cause similar symptoms, so it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and correct treatment.

Your GP will usually be able to diagnose asthma by asking about symptoms and carrying out some simple tests.

Treatments

The main types are:

● Reliever inhalers – used when needed to quickly relieve asthma symptoms (salbutamol) ● Preventer inhalers (steroid) – used every day to prevent asthma symptoms occurring ● Some people also need to take tablets.

Causes and triggers

Asthma is caused by swelling (inflammation) of the breathing tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. This makes the tubes highly sensitive, so they temporarily narrow.

It may occur randomly or after exposure to a trigger. Common asthma triggers include:

● Allergies – to house dust mites, animal fur or pollen, for example ● Smoke, pollution and cold air ● Exercise ● Infections like colds or flu ● Identifying and avoiding your asthma triggers can help you keep your symptoms under control

The active ingredients in the medicine are Ventolin and Salamol, two medicines that work together to relieve bronchospasm. These medicines contain salbutamol, which helps to prevent bronchospasm.

Salbutamol is a type of anti-allergy medication that relieves bronchospasm by acting on the beta cells of the airway.

Salbutamol is a short-acting beta-2 agonist, meaning it can be used to treat asthma or other respiratory conditions such as hives, difficulty breathing, and other lung issues. It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs, allowing them to open and allowing the air to flow freely. The medicine should be taken twice a day, but some people find it is necessary to use twice a day.

    How to Use

The recommended dose of Ventolin is 2 inhalations, twice a day, to prevent bronchospasm. It can be taken on an empty stomach, with a full glass of water, or with food. You can take it with or without food.

Side effects of Ventolin may include dizziness, headache, nausea, and upset stomach.

    Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Salbutamol can cause serious birth defects in a small number of pregnant women. This is because it can cause a condition called premature closure of the ductus arteriosus, which makes the airways narrow and causes them to leak out. This can cause a baby to have a heart defect, especially if taken during the first trimester of pregnancy. This can cause an increased risk of a heart attack or a stroke. If you have been exposed to an asthma drug during pregnancy, the risk of complications is increased.

Salbutamol is used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children who are at least 6 years old. It is usually taken once a day, but you may need to take it once every 12 hours as needed. If you have a heart condition or you have used an asthma medicine too long, your healthcare provider may recommend taking it as needed. Do not stop taking this medicine before the end of the day. This medication can be taken with or without food.

These may increase the risk of asthma attack or heart failure. If you are allergic to salbutamol or salbutamol sulphate, you should not take Ventolin. It may also cause a sudden increase in heart rate and blood pressure when you first start taking the medicine. If you have had an allergic reaction to salbutamol, you should not take Ventolin. If you have asthma, you may experience symptoms such as wheezing or shortness of breath, runny nose, or tightness in your chest. If you have been taking Ventolin for a long time, you may need to stop taking it and seek medical attention. Your healthcare provider will monitor your condition.

    How to Take

The dose and length of treatment are important factors when using Ventolin. Your healthcare provider will determine the most appropriate treatment based on your individual needs. They can also recommend the dosage or frequency of use. You should not stop taking the medicine suddenly without consulting a doctor first, as it can cause side effects. If you are taking Ventolin at the same time every day, you may experience the side effects mentioned above. You may also experience the side effects of a higher dose of Ventolin, which can make the medicine less effective.
